Different Caribbean Stud Strategies
In Caribbean Stud poker, it is commonly said that the only decision a player must make is whether to play or fold. However, to play wisely, players need to consider other factors.
When to Play
In general, players should always agree to play if they have two pairs, three of a kind, four of a kind, a straight, a flush, a full house, a straight flush or a royal flush. This is because the odds of the dealer having a hand that beats any of these is extremely slim. There are no bonuses for these hands, but the payouts are significant enough for many players to walk away from the poker table happy.
The Play on a Pair Strategy
Another strategy used by many Caribbean Stud players is called the Play on a Pair Strategy. Here, the rules dictate that players should always play if they have a pair in their hand, regardless of its value. Logically, the odds of either the player or the dealer getting a pair are quite low, so the odds of both the dealer and the player getting a pair are extremely low. Therefore, players with a pair certainly have an advantage.
The Ace and King
When players are dealt both an Ace and a King, they are often conflicted when it comes to making a decision. Actually, the decision to play or fold should rest on the third card. If it is a queen or jack, the player should call. If it is any other card, the player should only call when one of the dealer's cards matches a player card, as the chances of the dealer getting a pair are greatly reduced.
These three strategies are all tried-and-tested by professionals and amateurs alike. Although they will not win the game in every situation, they can certainly improve the odds.
